Carling League Cup

The Football League Cup, currently known as the Carling Cup, is an association football competition between the teams of England. It is similar to many of the other national cup tournaments around Europe and differentiates itself from the FA cup by only allowing teams from The Football League and the FA Premier League into the competition. The winners will qualify for the UEFA Europa League and for many teams this is their only real avenue into that tournament. The current cup is called the Carling Cup because Carling brewery is the primary sponsor. This trophy is not as prestigious as the FA cup, but that does not make the competition any less exciting. In fact in many cases it is more so because the larger clubs often do not place a heavy emphasis on the tournament instead fielding squads with weaker sides. This can lead to exciting matches between many of the teams throughout England.

A brief look at the League Cup

The first Football League Cup was played for after the 1960/61 season. The tournament was not as successful in the first couple years as many of the top clubs opted out of playing in the tournament. With the addition of an automatic entry into the UEFA Cup however this changed and many of the top squads that were unable to get in played in the Football League Cup to get into that tournament. The actual tournament is broken up into eight separate rounds, although some of these are not played every time.

The preliminary round is only played when needed and as of today this has only happened once in 2002-03. This round was set up to ease some of the matches and movement of teams into the third and second rounds. It usually involves clubs that finished lowest in all of the leagues and are all single matches with extra time and penalty shootouts.

All the teams from the different leagues other then the Premier begin in the first round. Teams that are currently competing in the UEFA Champions League or the UEFA Europa League will enter at later stages, but the majority of teams start their play here. The clubs are split up into a northern and southern section, and while these groups are set up to be equal they generally are not. The clubs are seeded and matched against each other with the winners progressing onto the next round. Not all clubs are seeded and for those that are not a random draw is made to figure out who the will play. In addition a draw is made to determine whether or not the seeded team will play at home. Similar to the preliminary round the matches are single with extra time and penalty shootouts. The winner will progress to the second round.

In the second round all clubs from the Premier League and the winners from the first round enter the competition. Play is the same as in the first round, single match with extra time and penalty shots, winner moving onto the third round. In the third round all of the clubs that will be competing in the UEFA Champions and UEFA Europa League enter to compete against the second round winners. This round will have a total of thirty two teams. Again, play is the same as the previous rounds. The winners from the third round proceed to the fourth round in the same format then again onto the fifth round, otherwise known as the quarter finals.

After the fifth round the four winners from the quarter finals meet up in the semi finals. In this round the format changes as ties are played over two matches with the aggregate score being used to figure out the winner. If this results in a time, extra time is played. If no one breaks the tie in extra time the team which scored the most away goals wins and moves onto the finals. Finally, if this is also equal a penalty shootout is used.

The two winners of these matches then proceed onto the finals where they meet in a single match played on neutral ground. This match has the same format as the matches before the semi finals with extra time and a penalty shootout if needed.

The most dominant team in the history of the Carling Cup is Liverpool having captured titles on seven different occasions. Other then them however there really is not another dominant team in this tournament. In fact many of the teams have had matches that resulted in Giant Killers rising up to defeat mighty squads. However a lot of these are not as famous as the matches from the FA Cup as all the teams in the Carling Cup come from the professional leagues across England.

While the Carling Cup is not as grand as the FA Cup, it is still an important tournament in English football. The implications of this tournament can have a wide ranging effect especially when it comes to international play. The majority of teams that enter the tournament do so to get the coveted spot in the Europa League. This spot was in danger following the restructuring of European football, but as of yet there has been no action on this. The Carling Cup is of most importance to the middle tier teams that are looking for a realistic way to get into international competition. For the fans of these teams and the teams themselves the Carling Cup offers a realistic way to make that happen. The trophy and tournament will continue to have an important place for these fans and clubs.

FA Cup

FA Cup

The FA Cup, or the Football Association Challenge Cup, is the oldest association football cup in the world. Because it has teams of all different playing levels there have been many memorable moments in its history. Dating back to 1871, the cup has been played continuously since its inception save for breaks for World War I and World War II. This cup has probably more tradition then any other in the history of English football. To win it is a special award reserved normally for the top team in the United Kingdom. There have however been many surprises along the way and just because a team seems to be a complete powerhouse does not mean that they will storm their way to victory.

The FA Cup, A History of Upset

When you look back on the past of the FA Cup there are several matches that stand out as being memorable. Some of these are because little teams step up and became “Giant Killers”. Others are simply great matches between powerhouses that have stayed in the memories of football fans around the world.

Unlikely Heroes In The FA Cup

One of the most memorable matches of all time came on February 13, 1971 when little Colchester took the field against mighty Leeds. That match pitched the small fourth division club against a mighty Division One giant. Don Revie was the manager of the powerhouse team from Leeds, but the inventor of the “Revie Plan” would be dogged and haunted by this day for his entire career. The team was defeated 3-2 with two goals coming from Ray Crawford in a hard fought match, and perhaps as a sign of their greatness or resilience Leeds would go on to win the FA Cup the following year.

The following year had another classic match when Hereford defeated Newcastle 2-1 in a match that has been replayed thousands of times on British television. The blast from Ronnie Radford sent Newcastle home and hundreds of fans to storm the pitch. This shot has lived on through replays for years and will continue to be an iconic representation of what the FA Cup is all about.

Another memorable match was the 1990 Cup Final between Manchester United and Crystal Palace. Manchester United was going for their seventh title and Crystal Palace their first. They had managed to make it to the semi’s in 1976, but no farther. This match featured it all. Scoring, great tackles, amazing play, but probably most memorable was the comeback of Ian Wright. Ian had suffered a double leg fracture earlier in the season and was not expected to play. Some how he came in with 20 minutes remaining and managed to score. This tied the score up and there it stayed until the extra time where Wright managed to score again. Manchester U would not be denied and managed to score forcing a replay. The replay did not go in Crystal Palace’s favour and they were criticized for it, but the original match will go down in history as one of the greatest played.

These three matches are just small examples of everything that the FA Cup represents. This can happen because of the way the competition for the cup is set up. While this setup is not unique to football association cup matches, since the FA Cup is the longest standing competition of this type it can be said that the FA Cup innovated it.

How The FA Cup Is Run

The competition is a standard knockout tournament with the pairings in each round being drawn at random. This configuration without seeds is what leads to some of the improbably match ups and even more improbable upsets. The tournament is redrawn each round and no one knows what the matches will be until the previous round has been completed. In addition to this, the home team is also determined at random and previous FA League rank has no bearing on the draw. There can be no ties, and if after a match the score is equal a replay is played at the previous away teams home field. If this match goes to a draw, then the leg is settled by extra time then penalty shootouts. This format did not come into play until the 1990s however where previously matches would be continuously played until a winner was determined. The record for most consecutive matches is 6 and Fulham had to play a record 12 matches over six rounds on their path to the final.

In the competition there are 14 rounds of competition broken down into six qualifying then six additional rounds. After these have been played there is a semi final then the final. The competition begins each year in August. There are some exemptions into the later rounds for teams that play in the higher leagues in the FA. The teams will play each round periodically throughout the year with the FA Cup being awarded after the end of the Premier League in May. This prolonged play builds up the suspense and leads to one of the most exiting finals in all of sports.

The FA Cup, England’s Own

At over 130 years the cup competition does not appear to be slowing any time soon. As a matter of fact, it still continues to generate more and more interest not only in England but around the world. The establishment of all the history and the pageantry of the award ceremony have led to the cup being famous around the world. Many football fans will go on record saying that the FA Cup is the greatest match in all of sports. Perhaps Sir Bobby Robson sums it up best in saying “The FA Cup Final is the greatest single match outside the World Cup Finals – and it’s ours”.

Premier League

Premier League

The English Premier League is the top English football league and perhaps all of Europe, and currently has some of the world’s most famous players and oldest clubs. Each club that competes in the FA Premier League has the fame and purse to attract the finest soccer players from around the world. The EPL is the highest grossing and most well known professional football league on the planet, with an exciting blend of on and off the field talent intriguing fans worldwide.

Englands football dark age

In the mid 1980′s football in England was at an all time low point. Stadiums were falling apart, hooliganism was rampant, and soccer as a whole in England was not well received worldwide. There was a rash of unpleasant incidents in the eighties including the death of 39 fans at Heysel stadium. This event led to the banning of all English teams by UEFA from all European competition. This single event has been called the worst in the history of UEFA. Because of this, the world’s top players would not even consider playing football for an English team. This however was not the bottom. That happened in a 1989 match at Hillsborough between Liverpool and Nottingham in which 96 fans died and over 150 were injured. Because of this event the Taylor Report was commissioned to take a look into the state of English football. This report recommended change in all major stadia to ensure the safety and health of all spectators. The main focus was that all stadia needed to be converted to all seat models in which every ticketed spectator had a seat. All clubs hoping to be in the highest league had to comply with this recommendation. Some clubs had already recognized there was a problem and begun updates before the report was released. Other parts of the report focused on the construction of crush barriers, fences and other methods to ensure that events would be safe for people of all ages. This report was the first step towards the forming of a new set of rules and eventually the Premier League itself.

The rise of the Premiership

In the wake of the Taylor Report, the top clubs in England not only had to worry about their ability to attract quality players, but also the significant expenses required to restructure their stadia. Even before the report was released many clubs were threatening to leave and form their own league in an attempt to capture and take advantage of television revenue. Eventually all of the clubs recognized that radical change was needed and on the 17th of July 1991 the Founding Members Agreement was signed establishing the basic principles of the Premier League. The biggest of which was the Premiership break from the Football League and the Football Association and freedom to negotiate its own television broadcasts and revenue streams. Soon after a radical deal was struck BSkyB to broadcast games and offered them on a pay basis. This was somewhat of a new concept in sports, and definitely something new for English football. The original deal was worth 191 million pounds over 5 years and the league now had the capital to really launch itself to the forefront and begin trying to once again attract the world’s greatest players.

In 1990, right before the forming of the English Premier League, UEFA decided to lift the ban on English footballs participation in their competitions. This lifting would be important in years to come as attracting players from other countries without it would prove to be virtually impossible. The main motivating factor that established the Premier League was the amount of money they were able to receive in the television contract. In 1986 The Football Leagues television contract was 6.3 million pound for 2 seasons. As stated above, the new super league was able to negotiate 191 million dollars for five years, and this number continues to grow. Without this influx of capital, English football may never have returned to prominence. While money is a great thing, it does not necessarily cure all of ones problems, whether they are personal or for a league of super teams.

EPL from strength to strength

In 1992 the First Division clubs withdrew from the Football League. The FA Premier League was formed in May of that year by the teams that had withdrawn. With the top teams gone, the Football League would continue to operate and continue its 104 year tradition, although it would now only have three lower leagues instead of all four. The format of the new Premier League stayed the same, except that they were completely relieved of being tied revenue wise to the lower Football League. Initially there were 22 teams in the league, however it was the intention since the inception to cut that back to 20 and as of now that is how many there are. Each of the clubs in the league is considered to be a part owner in the league. As such, each team receives one vote in meetings to resolve issues like rule changes and other things. All of the clubs votes to elect the members that look after the daily operations of the league.

The league continues to grow and become a force in the world of football. As of 2008, it was ranked as the highest grossing league with La Liga, Spain and Serie A, Italy trailing behind. Because of the influx of money and establishment of rules to address previous issue, the Premier League, aka Premiership, EPL, can now attract the best players in the world. When it was formed there were only 11 non British or Irish footballers, today this has grown to over 250. The Premier League will continue to dominate world football for years to come, although as you can see that was not always the case. Through hard work and effort the Premier League was able to rise to the top.

Live Premier League Football Online

EPL Football Live Online Available

Date
